It always starts with a corridor.

Empty, echoing, stretched just enough to make the footsteps feel important.

Mattie thought they were his.

My poor, sweet little hero. So serious. So ready to defend me—chest puffed, voice deepened just enough to feel like it mattered. I think he even flared his arms a bit. You know, like animals do when they sense danger and forget they’re prey.

It was subtle at first. Hips widened in protest. Shoulders pinched forward like he forgot how to own them. And then—my favorite part—that full-body twitch of surrender as the first petal brushed his cheek.

Gods, he tried.

He lunged mid-transformation. Voice breaking. Hair lengthening. Charging like he still had something to prove. And the blonde? He didn’t flinch. Just plucked one rose free and offered it like it was a leash.

That’s when Mattie folded.
Ballerina mode engaged.
Twirl. Blush. Submit.
A little obsessed, aren’t we darling?

I was probably supposed to say something by then. Maybe intervene. Or laugh. Or act surprised.

But I was just… watching.
Not really there anymore.
Hard to say when I left.
Harder to say if I ever did.
